GUIDELINES FOR MANAGEMENT OF GREEN HOUSE GASES (GHG)
AND FUGITIVE EMISSIONS FROM MIDSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM
PETROLEUM OPERATIONS IN NIGERIA
Appendix |: Technical Descriptions and Calculation
a. Carbon Dioxide equivalent (CO2e(Kg)) =mass of gas {kg) x Global Warming Potential (GWP)
Where:
COze (Kg) = carbon dioxide equivalent in Kilograms.
Mass of gas (kg) = the actual mass of the greenhouse gas emitted (in Kilograms)
GWP = the 100year Global Warming Potential (GWP) for the relevant GHG generated from fossil
sources based on the latest published IPCC Assessment Report.
6. EPA Method 21: This method is applicable for the determination of VOC leaks from
Process equipment. These sources include, but are not limited to, valves, flanges
and other connections, pumps and compressors, pressure relief devices, process
drains, open-ended valves, pump and compressor seal system degassing vents,
accumulator vessel vents, agitator seals, and access door seals.
c.
EPA method 22: This method
is applicable for the visual determination of Fugitive
emissions and also for the determination of the frequency of visible smoke emissions
from flares.
d. Estimation of Emissions Using Emission Factor
°
GHG Emissions (KgCOze) = Activity Data(MT) x Emission Factor x Global Warming Potential (GWP)
(where applicable}
(where applicable)
Where:
GHG Emissions (Kg CO-ze) = Greenhouse Gas emissions in kilogram of CO2 equivalent
Activity Data = quantity of the activity causing emissions (e.g. litres of fuel burned, kWh of electricity
consumed)
Emission Factor = amount of GHGs emitted per unit of activity (e.g. kg CO-e Jliter, kg COze/kWh)
GWP=
100 year Giobal Warming Potential (GWP)
for the relevant GHG generated from fossil
sources based on the latest published IPCC Assessment Report.
°
Total GHG Emissions (KgCOze) = a4
[Activity Data, (Kg) x Emission Factor; x Global Warming Pofential, (GWP))
(where applicable)
(where applicable)
