AND FUGITIVE EMISSIONS FROM MIDSTREAM AND DOWNSTREAM
PETROLEUM OPERATIONS IN NIGERIA
Appendix IV- Definitions
.
Activity Data: Data on the magnitude of a human activity resulting
in emissions or
removals taking place during a given period. Data on energy use, metal production,
land
areas, management systems,
lime and
fertilizer
use,
and waste
arisings
are
examples of activity data
Authority: The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority
(NMDPRA)
.
Base year: The year
in which the Regulated Parties carry out for the
first time,
in
accordance
with
these
Provisions,
the
quantification
of GHG
emissions
in
the
hydrocarbons Sector Facilities, and which will serve as a reference to the emissions of
subsequent years
Breathing Losses: Describes gas vapors that are released from an uncontrolled storage
tank when the tank is subjected to a temperature rise, for example as a result of heat
from the sun.
Centrifugal compressor: Equipment that increases the pressure of
— natural gas by
centrifugal action through an impeller (Screw, sliding vane, and liquid ring compressors
are not centrifugal compressors).
Centrifugal compressor seal: A wet or dry seal around the compressor shaft where the
shaft exits the compressor case.
COz equivalent (CO2-eq)
emission means
the amount
of carbon dioxide
(CO2)
emission
that would cause the same integrated radiative forcing
or temperature
change, over a given time horizon, as an emitted amount of a greenhouse gas (GHG)
or a mixture
of GHGs. There are
a number of ways
to compute such equivalent
emissions and choose appropriate time horizons. Most typically, the CO2-equivalent
emission
is obtained
by multiplying the emission
of
a GHG by
its global warming
potential (GWP)
for a 100-year time horizon. For a mix of GHGs,
it
is obtained by
summing up the CO2-equivalent emissions of each gas. CO2-equivalent emission
is a
common
scale
for comparing
emissions
of
different GHGs
but does
not
imply
equivalence of the corresponding climate change responses.
